Biruk's story: "No material success could fulfil my inner emptiness".

Over recent months its been a joy for us to get to know Biruk. Biruk is a part of the Grace Church family. Here he tells his story of finding in Jesus Christ what the world could never give him.

A capable student

"I grew up in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, a city of more than two and a half million people.

I was a capable student and studying came naturally to me.

At high school, I became deeply involved in political activities, science, and philosophy. This shift in focus led me to question the existence of God.

Coming from a family of successful business owners, I had everything I needed materially. I enjoyed a good reputation and acceptance in my community, and I had a strong academic record.

By the age of 17, I was selected to join the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute with NASA instructors.

At 18, due to my political activities, I was chosen for the young government leadership program. I joined Addis Ababa University to study for an electrical and electronics engineering degree.

A sense of despair

Despite all these achievements and what seemed like a clear path to success, I always felt an inner emptiness, despair, and restlessness.

I often thought about suicide, realising that no material success could fulfil my inner emptiness.

During this time of inner turmoil, I often thought about suicide, realising that no material success could fulfil my inner emptiness.

I came to understand that everything would feel normal, even boring, after achieving it.

The love of God

I had a Christian friend who frequently told me about Jesus and encouraged me to attend the Christian University Students Fellowship with him. I eventually agreed to go with him.

During the service, I unexpectedly experienced a profound sense of peace, joy, and rest.

I unexpectedly experienced a profound sense of peace

From that day on, I began learning more about the gospel. I came to understand the love of God, that Jesus Christ died for me. This love satisfied me and removed the deep sense of emptiness.

I rejoined my local church, where I had attended as a child, and was baptised there. This marked the beginning of my renewed faith and journey as a Christian. When I moved to the UK, and to Wakefield, I was happy to meet Christians at Grace Church, and I have made it my spiritual home."

Jesus said, "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" If Biruk's story connects with you, we'd encourage you to get in touch with us at Grace Church to ask your questions about Jesus Christ.
